The MSI Colloquia
Our partnerships with MSIs are essential in supporting collaborative and equitable research produced from the laboratory and foster deep relationships we can leverage to tackle some of our most pressing hiring and retention challenges.
Funded by the DOE’s Workforce Development for Teachers and Scientists (WDTS) program, the DEI+ office has developed MSI Colloquia Series, expanding SLAC's reach across 10 schools over the next year. By visiting these MSIs, most of which were on campus, our faculty and staff are better positioned to deepen their relationships with MSI faculty, which can potentially yield collaborations on experiments and scientific projects.

GEM Fellowship Program
SLAC is a founding member of The National GEM Consortium, which enhances the value of the nation’s human capital by increasing the participation of underrepresented groups (African Americans, American Indians, and Hispanic Americans) at the master’s and doctoral levels in engineering and science.
The lab participates in the GEM Fellowship Program, which recruits high performing students from underrepresented and marginalized backgrounds looking to pursue master's or Doctoral degrees in applied science and engineering and matches their specific skills to the specific technical needs of GEM employer partners.
The program provides students:
$4,000 living stipend per full-time semester up to 4 semesters ($8K per academic year - 3 quarters)
Minimum $16,000 total stipend over the entire master's program/ Full $16,000 stipend if Ph.D. student
Up to two paid summer internships with a GEM Employer Member / one paid summer internship as a Ph.D.
Full tuition and fees provided by a GEM University Member

K-12 STEM Programs
SLAC's CORE ERG hosts elementary and middle school students from underrepresented communities for a week-long science camp. Through tours, hands-on projects, and career talks students engage with laboratory staff to learn about the different careers needed to support SLAC’s scientific mission and cultivate a sense of belonging in science. Students learn how to think like scientists and engineers through experiments such as building magnet accelerators. For example, last year, by using magnets and ball bearings, they learned how charged particles interact with fields and built their own foam pipe marble roller coaster to test out principles of potential and kinetic energy. The week culminates on Friday with a student poster presentation, open to all SLAC staff, during which each group of students developed their science communication skills as they presented their poster to the audience. K-12 STEM Programs
The Science Accelerating Girls’ Engagement (SAGE) Journey is a workforce development program for growing the number of women and other gender minorities in STEM roles. Specifically, the mission of this program is to provide opportunities for women and other gender minorities to move into technical staff and leadership positions within the DOE national laboratories. The SAGE Journey starts with the SAGE Camp program and leads students to SAGE Internships, SAGE Jobs, and eventually SAGE Leadership roles.
SLAC leads the program and 5 national laboratories joined forces in the past 3 years: Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, and Los Alamos National Laboratory. So far, the SAGE Journey program has 550 alumni to support this group of students in their SAGE Journey.
