DOE Funding Opportunity Announcements
Reaching a New Energy Sciences Workforce (RENEW)
Reaching a New Energy Sciences Workforce (RENEW) aims to build foundations for Office of Science (SC) research at institutions historically underrepresented in the SC research portfolio. RENEW leverages SC’s unique national laboratories, user facilities, and other research infrastructures to provide training opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, and faculty at academic institutions not currently well represented in the U.S. science and technology ecosystem. The hands-on experiences gained through the RENEW initiative will open new career avenues for the participants, forming a nucleus for a future pool of talented young scientists, engineers, and technicians with the critical skills and expertise needed for the full breadth of SC research activities. Principal investigators, key personnel, postdoctoral researchers, and students of RENEW awards will be invited to participate in program research meetings and/or SC-wide professional development events.
Funding for Accelerated, Inclusive Research (FAIR)
Funding for Accelerated, Inclusive Research (FAIR) aims to build research capacity, infrastructure, and expertise at institutions historically underrepresented in the Office of Science portfolio, including minority serving institutions (MSIs) and emerging research institutions (ERIs). FAIR supports mutually beneficial relationships between MSIs and ERIs with partnering institutions to perform basic research in fields supported by the Office of Science.
Promoting Inclusive and Equitable Research Plan
As of FY2023, all Department of Energy Office of Science FOAs, DOE National Lab Announcements, and other funding solicitations will require applicants to submit a Promoting Inclusive and Equitable Research (PIER) Plan describing the activities and strategies applicants will incorporate to promote diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility in their research projects. PIER Plans will be evaluated as part of the merit review process and will be used to inform funding decisions.
The DEI+ Office is providing research teams support with preparing their PIER Plans through PIER Training Workshops and advising. We will help you understand the barriers that impede high performing and inclusive teams and provide outreach support, training, and connections that can be leveraged in putting together your proposal.
